- a. அகரு - இது ஒரு காட்டுச் செடி, குத்துக்குத்துகளாக இருக்கும். இதில் சில சிறிய மரங்களாகவும் வளரும். இதன் இலைகள் மாறி மாறியும் ஓரங்களில் அரும்பு வாய்ந்தவை களாகவும், பூ பூனை வாலைப் போலவும் இருக்கும். காய், மூன்று அறைகள் உள்ளது. இதில் இரண்டு விதங்கள் உண்டு-1 தெப்பல் அகரு இது மருந்திற்கு உபயோகப்படும்.
b. A kind of woody shrub found in groups but some of the them grow into even small trees. Leaves usually alternate, with toothed margins. The flowers resemble the tail of the cat and the fruits contain three cells each. It consists of two kinds namely – 1. Floating Agaru used in medicine.

b. The fragrant light wood of அகரு tree - eagle wood – Aquila xylaloo. (In Botany) it is said to belongs to Excoecaria genus and the species best known are classified as Agallocha (Tiger’s Milk) and Sebifera (China tallow). The other South Indian Species, indigenous and naturalised are Baccata, Cochin, Chinensis, Indica, Insignis and Oppositifolia. This name is also used for (a) Aquilaria agallocha (Eaglewood) (b) Pterocarpus santalinus (Red sanders) as in அகருகந்தம்”.
