- a. வரி நெல்லி, இம்மரம் தென்னிந்தியாவில் சாதாரணமாய் எங்குங் காணப்படும். தோட்டங்களில் அதிகமாகப் பயிரிடப்படும். இதன் காய் மஞ்சளாகவும், மேற்புறம் வரிவரியாகவும் இருப்பதால் இதற்கு ‘அரிநெல்லி’ யென்று பெயர். நெல்லிக்காயைப் போல் புளிப்பாக இருக்கும். உள்ளே கடினமான கொட்டை உண்டு. இது புளிப்பாக விருக்கும். பச்சையாகத் தின்பதுண்டு. ஊறுகாய்க்கும் உதவும். யுனானி வைத்தியர்கள் இதைச் சர்க்கரைப் பாகுடன் சேர்த்துச் சர்ப்பத்தாக உபயோகப்படுத்துவார்கள். இதன் வேர்க் கஷாயம் பித்தத்தினால் வரும் அரோசிகம், சுரம், வாந்தி இவைகளைக் குணப்படுத்தும்.
b. A small tree called country star goose-berry; Brazil cherry-Phyllanthus distchus. This is commonly seen everywhere in South India and is much cultivated in gardens. Its yellow fruit is streaked with lines and is sour like the gooseberry fruit. It has a hard stone in the inside. It is sour to the taste and is eaten raw. It is also pickled and preserved. Unani syrup is prepared out of it. The decoction of the root is given in cases of nausea, fever, vomiting etc. The root is an active purgative and the seed is also used as a cathartic.
a. கருநெல்லி, இது அகப்படுவது மிகவும் அரிது. மலைகளின் உச்சிகளில் மாத்திரம் அகப்படும் என்று கருதப்படும். இதற்கு ஆச்சரியப் படத்தக்க குணங்களுண்டு. சித்தர்கள் இதைக் காயகற்பத்திற்காக உபயோகிப்பார்கள்.
b. Black gooseberry – Phyllanthus reticulatus. The variety referred to by Siddhars is a rare fruit and is said to be found only on hill-tops. It is said to have extraordinary virtues and is very useful in medicines. Siddhars use this to strengthen the system and for promoting longevity.
