- a. அசோகு - அசோக மரம் (அ + சோகம், துயரமின்மை). இராமாயாணத்திற் சொல்லியுள்ள படி சீதை இராவணானால் அசோக வனத்தில் சிறையில் வைக்கப்பட்ட காலத்தில் அவளுடைய துயரத்தை மாற்றினதால் இம்மரத்திற்கு இக்காரணப் பெயர் வந்தது. மற்றும், இதற்கு விசித்திரம், சாயை, அங்கணப் பிரியை, கிருமி காரகம், என்று பல பெயர்களுமுண்டு, இம்மரம் பருத்தும், பூக்கள், கொத்துக்கள் உள்ளதாயும், பல நிறம் வாய்ந்ததாயுமிருக்கும். இது வெய்யிற் காலத்தில் பூக்கும். பார்வைக்கு அழகாயும் நிழலைத் தரக்கூடியதாயுமிருக்கும். இதன் பட்டை ஆயுள் வேதத்தில் கர்ப்பக் கோளாறுக்கு விசேஷமாய் உபயோகப்படுமெனக் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதைக் கஷாயமாக வைத்துப் பாளிற்கலந்து கொடுப்பதுண்டு. இதன் மரம் மிக்க இலேசானதாகவும், மிருதுவானதாயும், கபிலநிறம் வாய்ந்ததாகவுமிருக்கும்.
b. Wing – leaved Asoka tree – Saraca indica alias Jonesia asoka. It literally means ‘sorrow dispeller’ and is so called because Sita, according to Ramayana, is supposed to have dispelled her sorrow under this tree, when she was kept in confinement there by Ravana. It is called by different names viz. many colored tree, shady tree, tree dear to women, and worm producing tree.
It is a tree of considerable size, and bears clusters of flowers of varying color. The tree flowers during the hot season. It is also an ornamental tree yielding shade. The bark is used in uterine affections (especially in Menorrhogia) as a decoction in milk. The wood is light, soft and of a reddishbrown.
