- a. அக்குறோட்டு - இது ஒரு பெரியமரம். இதன் பூக்கள் வெண்மையாயும் பூனை வாலைப்போலும் இருக்கும். திருவனந்தபுரம், மைசூர் முதலிய இடங்களில் காணப்படும். ஆனால் இமயமலை, காஸ்மீரம், திபெத், காபூல் முதலிய இடங்களில் ஏராளமாக உண்டு. இது பார்வைக்கு அழகாயும் ஒவ்வொரு பாகமும் நறுமணம் வாய்ந்ததாயுமிருக்கும், கோடை காலத்தில், இம் மரத்தின் கீழ், அதன் நிழலுக்காக நிற்பவர்களுக்குப் பூமணத்தினால் தலைவலி ஏற்படுவதுண்டு. இதிலிருந்து ஓர்விதப் புளிப்புத் திரவமும், இதன் கொட்டைப் பருப்பிலிருந்து எண்ணெயும் எடுப்பார்கள். இவ்வெண்ணெய் விளக்கெரிப்பதற்கும், சமையலுக்கும் உதவும். இக்கொட்டை மிகுதியாகத் தின்பதுண்டு. இதில் நாட்டு அக்ரோட்டு என்பது மற்றோர் இனம். இது பெல்காம் முதலிய விடங்களில் மிகுதியாகவுண்டு.
b. Walnut tree. Juglans regia alias Jovis glans. This is a large tree with white flowers in catkin. It is found in Travancore, Mysore and some other parts in Southern India, but grows in great perfection on the Himalayas, Kashmir, Tibet, Kabul and so on. It is elegant to look at and all the parts of the plant possess a peculiar pleasant scent, but causes head ache to those who remain long in its shade in hot weather. The pericarp contains tannic acid and gallic acid. The oil procured by heat from kernels is used for burning lamps and for culinary purposes. Country walnut tree - Aleuritis triloba is another species found largely grown in Belgaum. Hence it is also known as Belgaum Walnut or Lumbang nut tree.
NOTE: The word Akhrot is the Hindi name used in Tamil as such. There are several varieties of this, the best being the thin shelled or Canghazee acroot. The Belgaum Walnut or the Indian Walnut is non officinal like castor oil. For details see under நாட்டு அக்குறோட்டு.
