அஷ்டகரும மூலிகை

a. அகஸ்தியர் மாந்திரீக காவியத்தில் சொல்லியுள்ள (1) ஆகருஷணம், (2) உச்சாடனம், (3) தம்பனம், (4) பேதனம்,(5) மாரணம்,(6) மோகனம், (7) வசியம்,(8) வித்து வேடனம், ஆக எட்டு வித மாந்திரீகத் தொழில்களில் ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் எட்டெட்டு மூலிகைகளை அடியிற்கண்டபடி பல காரியங்களுக்கு உபயோகிக்க வேண்டுமென்று வரையறுத்த வண்ணம் கூடிய மொத்தம் 8 X 8 அல்லது 64 மூலிகைகள், அவையாவன:-.

b. The 64 kinds of plants (with psychic properties) described in the Tamil Mantric science compiled by Agastyar. They are classified into 8 groups, each consisting of 8 drugs, prescribed for each of the above said eight kinds of magic. They are employed for various purposed as mentioned below. The below mentioned 64 plants are generally employed in medicine, so far as their physiological properties are concerned, but here it is clear from the below enumeration, that they are also useful in other ways when taken into consideration the psychological virtues in them. So, it leads one to come to a positive conclusion that plants also have two-fold functions just in the same way as animal including human beings have, but that when one is active, the other lies completely dormant. It is also apparent from the various uses set forth against each of the below mentioned I Plants, that they all possess such wonderful powers as are not within the easy comprehension of man unless he be one, acquainted with the occult study of plants. It can also be seeing that man’s diseases also orginate from the influences which act upon him from outside and enter his constitution. The Astral influences brought about by the above said eight-fold functions of magic are invisible; nevertheless, they act upon men or women in various ways as pointed out. So, the diseases etc. originating from the spiritual causes can be cured only by spiritual means. By the judicious use of plants, beneficial astral activities may be attracted or evil influences either averted or brought about or neutralised.
