அகப்பேய் சித்தர்

இவர் தமிழ்நாட்டுச் சித்தர்களில் ஒருவர். வேளாளர் மரபில் தோன்றி உலகத்தில் அனேக சித்துக்கள் ஆடினவர். இவர் வாத, வைத்திய, யோக, ஞான மார்கங்களைத் தெளிவான நடையில் உலகத்தோர் எளிதில் அறியும்படிப் பாடியவர். இவரால் ஏற்பட்ட அனேக பாடல்கள் அகத்தியர் பெயரால் வழங்கும். இவர் அனேக கால முயிரோடிருந்து பிறகு சமாதி புகுந்தார் எனச் சொல்லப்படும்; (அகம்+பேய்+சித்தர்) மனமாகிய பேயை வென்று சித்தியடைந்தவர் என இவருக்கு காரணப் பெயராகக் - கொள்ளினும் பொருந்தும். - He was one of the Siddhars of the Tamil country belonging to the Vellala caste or community. He was said to have performed many miracles in the world. He compiled several treatises in clear easy verses on Alchemy, Medicine, and Mental and Moral Philosphy. Many of his poems are erroneously attributed to Agastiyar. He was said to have lived for several years and then entered Samadhi. The name can also be applied to him literally as indicating one who conquered the ever restless (devilish) mind.
Note: சித்தத்தில் சிந்தித்தபடியே உடலும் உண்பனவும் அடைந்து அனுபவிக்கின்றவர்களே சித்தர்கள். இவர்கள் சிவனெறியைப் பூண்டு ஒழுகிய சித்த சமயத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தமிழ் மக்கள். இவர்கள் காரண காரிய வகைகளால் உடம்பைச் சோதித்து எவ்வெவ்வகைப் பொருள்களால் உடல் வளர்ந்து அழிகின்ற தென்பதை ஊக்கத்தாலும் முயற்சியாலும் கண்டறிந்து உடம்பைப் பொய்யென்று சொல்லுவதற்கு மாறாக மெய்யென்ற சொல்லுக்குப் பொருள்கண்டு சிலப்பதிகாரத்திற் கண்டபடி அணிமா, மகிமா முதலிய அஷ்டமா சித்திகளை அடைந்து அனேக காலம் உயிருடனிருக்கக் கூடிய வாழ்வைப் பெற்றவர்களாவர்.
மேலும் மூச்சை அடக்கிப் பிடித்து மூலக்கனலாகிய குண்டலி சக்தியை எழுப்பி மணி மந்திர மருந்துகளின் உதவியால் மாறாத மதியமுதம் உண்டு, நரை, திரை, மூப்பு, பிணி, சாக்காடு ஆகிய இவைகளை அறியாது நித்திய உடம்பைப் பெற்றவர்கள். ககன குளிகை கொண்டு அனேக அண்டங்களைச் சுற்றி ஆங்காங்குள்ள அதிசயங்களைக் கண்டு ஆனந்திப்பவர்கள். தமிழ் வைத்தியத்திற்குக் காரண கர்த்தர்களாகி உலகத்தாருக்குப் பயன்படும்படி அனேக நூற்களைப் பாடி வைத்த மகான்கள். இவர்கள் தொகை எழுவதினாயிரம் என்று சொல்லப்படும். - The siddhars were of a tamil sect which maintained siva for its god, and rejected everything else in the saiva system which was inconsistent with pure Theism. They were persons holding tremendous powers in themselves and who, if they choose could retain their bodies for ages or disintegrate them by chemical process, powers of words or concentration of will. They had investigated and studied fully all kinds of drugs, minerals and poisons and their physical, chemical and psychological properties and therefore they knew what was beneficial and what was not to their existence. They held that the body was the one and only instrument with which one could attain success in spiritual evolution and growth and that if the body could only be made strong and perfect they could get rid of birth and death eventually after the full growth and development of the soul. They attained spiritual awakening by rousing the kundalini (Serpent fire or power as it is termed) lying dormant at the base of the spinal column in the region of the sacral plexus and thereby attained all Siddhis. They were the masters of their bodies and could change the very materials in them by re arranging the molecules in such a fashion that they had no more sickness of death. They could send mental electricity without the aid of the nerve channels and thus work all over the universe with any one at any place. They could fly through the aerial with the aid of animated mercurial pills. Many of the most wonderful medicines of the present day owe, their origin to them notably the use of metals regions medicines. They are 70,000 in number.
