- a. பொன்னம்பர் அல்லது கற்பூரமண், இது தேவதாரு முதலிய மரங்களின் பிசின், தானாகவே உறைந்து பூமிக்குள் அமைந்தது. இது சுண்ணாம்பு நிலத்தில் விளைந்துமரத்தின் பிசினாகையால் இதற்குத் தமிழில் ‘கற்பூ’ என்றும், துணுக்கு பாஷையில் ‘கற்பா’என்றும் பெயர். ஜப்பான் தேசத்திலிதை ‘நம்பு’ என்றுசொல்வதுண்டு, இக்கற்பூவை மணியாகச்செய்வதால் இதற்குக் கற்பூர மணியென்றும் பெயர் வழங்கும். இதைப் போன்ற வோர் வஸ்து சிசிலித் தீவிலும் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுருக்கிறது. இது ஆத்தும சக்தியை அதிகப்படுத்தி உடம்பிற்கு வழியைத் தரும் இதனால் பக்க வாதம், பாரிச வாயு, கீல் வாதம் முதலிய நோய்கள் தீரும். இதை நசியமிடச் சன்னி, சைத்தியம், சலுவைமுதலியன தீரும். இதனின்றும் திராவகம், எண்ணெய் முதலியன தயார் செய்து, யுனானிவைத்தியர்கள் நோய்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பார்கள். நமது நாட்டில் மீனம்பர் சாதாரணமாய்க் கிடைக்கக் கூடிய தாகையால், அதைத் தான் அம்பர் என்று சொல்லுவார்கள். அது தமிழ் வைத்தியத்தில் அவ்வளவு விசேஷமாய், உபயோகப்படுவாதக ஒன்றும் தெரியவில்லை.

It is termed ‘karbak’ in Ilindustani and ‘nambu’ in Japan, as this resin is made into beads, it is also known as ‘Camphor beads’.Succinum or electrum. Amber of a fine quality is found in the Deccan but it is very rare. It is occasionally met with in Travancore and Assam. It is generally imported from Japan and China. Unani Doctors give this oil in diseases. In our country, people generally mean ambergiris by amber, that being the most common, Copal is often sold in the bazaar as amber. Its volatile oil is rubefacient, antispasmodic and a stimulant. It does not appear to be useful in Tamil medicines.
