a. அப்பிரகம் - கண்ணாடியைப் போன்ற ஓர் தாதுப் பொருள். இது சாதாரணமாய் மற்ற உலோகங்களைப் போலவே, நெல்லூர், மத்திய மாகாணம் முதலிய இடங்களில் சுரங்கங்களினின்றும் அடுக்கடுக்காய் வெட்டி எடுக்கப்படும். இது தமிழ் வைத்தியப்படி, நூற்றிருபது உபரசச் சரக்குகளில் ஒன்று. இதற்குப் பூ விந்து நாதம், மனோன்மணி நாதம், மகா விந்து, மகாப் பிரகாச சத்தி, கேசரம், அம்பரை நாதம், என்ற பல பெயர்களும் உண்டு.தமிழ்நாட்டு வைத்தியர்கள் இதைக் கொண்டு பற்பம், செந்தூரம், சுண்ணம், சத்து, வெண்ணெய் முதலிய மருந்துகள் செய்து முடித்து, நீரிழிவு, குடலண்ட விருத்தி, எலும்புருக்கி, மகோதரம், வெட்டைச் சூடு, உடம்பு வறட்சி, மேகம் முதலிய நோய்களுக்கும், உடம்பிற்கும் வலிவு, தேகக் காந்தி, தாது புஷ்டி, முதலியவைகள் ஏற்படுவதற்கும் உபயோகிப்பார்கள்.ஆனால், ஆயுள்வேத பண்டிதர்களும், யுனானி வைத்தியர்களும், இதைத்தண்ணீரிலூறப் போட்டு அந்தண்ணீரைக் குடிப்பதற்கும், மருந்துகளில்சேர்த்தும், உபயோகிப்பார்கள். இது ஐந்து வகைப்படும். அவையாவன கிருஷ்ண அல்லது கருப்பு அப்பிரகம், வெள்ளி அப்பிரகம், பொன்னப்பிரகம், கெந்தக அப்பிரகம், தேனப்பிரகம்.தமிழ் சித்த நூற்படித், தாது வகைகளில் இது ஐந்து வகைகளாக வகுக்கப்பட்டிருப்பினும், ஆயுள் வேதப்படி நான்கு விதங்களாகவே கொள்ளப்படும். அவையாவன நாகம், பேகம், பிநாகம், வச்சிரம், ஆனால் கடைசியாகக் கண்ட வச்சிரம் என்பதே வைத்தியத்தில் உபயோகிக்கப்படும்.
b. The term (literally) means appu +piragam, which means water bearer. It is a trade name for Indian mica, transparent like glass, it is a mineral called hydrous silicate of magnesia and like several other metals, it is usually dug out from the mica mines of Nellore, Central Provinces and other places in India. It splits up into thin plastic plates - Talcum. It is called by several names and is regarded as the menstrunum of the Godess of the Universe called Sakthi. The Tamil Vaidyans prepare different medicines by calcining it, such as oxide, red oxide, calcium compound of mica and so on and prescribe them for various disease viz. Diabetes, Hernia, Tuberculosis of the bone, Dropsy or Ascites, Venercal heat, urinary disorders etc. They also use them as tonics for invigorating the system and for improving the secretion of semen and giving lustre to the body. Unani and Ayurvedic doctors soak it in water and prescribe the water as a drink. The ointment prepated from it is called ‘Navaneetham’. The drug consists of five varieties according to the nature of the colour such as
1. Black coloured Adamant mica. Calcined, it is given by Vaidyan for fluxes.
2. Silver or gray coloured White mica. Granulated silver sand. It is a common kind prescribed for diabetes.
3. Gold coloured Yellow mica looking like yellow orpiment. Calcine, it is a pectoral medicine.
4. Sulphur coloured – Sulphur mica.
5. Honey coloured – Teenah according to the Tamil Siddhar’s science. Although it consists of 5 varieties, yet as per Ayurveda, it is divided into only four classes as mentioned above, according to their virtues. The last mentioned vajram alone is fit to be used in Medicine.
The Hindus and the mahomadans of Southern India, confound talc and mica together and Mr. Murray has classed the first under the Mazoosiam earth and the latter under Silicious. Talc can be distinguished by its unctuous tonch and by its plates beign flexible, but not classic. Indian mica is rarely found in large flakes and it consists of thin, glossy, transparent scales, composed of aluminium silicate. Although this mica is sometimes called talc it is not the talc of the Europeon Geologists, which is a silicate of magnesium, a white unctuous neutral powder. All the different kinds of talcs and micas are to be found in Hindustan and Southern India, but the gray variety is the most common, yellow tale (manjal appiragam)is generally mistaken for the golden coloured orpiment (thaalagam), European tale is sometimes used in insufflating powders and as a remedy for diarrhoea.
