- a. இது ஒரு பூச்சியினின்று கழியும் வஸ்து. இதைத் தவறுதலாகப் பிசினெனச் சொல்வதுண்டு. அப்பூச்சிகளின் பெண் வகை, மரங்களின் கிளைகளில் தொளைகளிட்டு அவைகளுள் முட்டையிட்டு வசிக்கும்போது அவைகளின் உடம்பினின்று கழியும் பிசின் போன்ற வஸ்து தான் அரக்கு. அதை எங்கும் சாயம் போடுவதற்காகவும், மசி கூடுகாகவும் உபயோகப்படுத்துவதுண்டு. அரக்கில் அரக்குப் புளிப்பு என்று சொல்லும் ஒரு விதமான புளிப்பு தங்கி நிற்கும். வைத்தியர்கள், நாட்பட்ட குடல் நோய்களுக்கு அதை மருந்தாக உபயோகிப்பார்கள். அதுவுமின்றி நல்லெண்ணெயோடு அதை மற்றச் சரக்குகளுடன் சேர்த்துத் தைலமிறக்கி நாட்பட்ட சுரத்தால் அடிபட்டு பலஹீனப் பட்டவர்களுக்குத் தலை முழுகக் கொடுப்பதுண்டு. அரக்குக் கஷாயத்தை அகீம்கள் (யுனானி வைத்தியர்) புண்கள் கழுவுவதற்கு உபயோகிப்பார்கள். அரக்குக் கஷாயத்தில் கடுகெண்ணெய், மஞ்சனாத்தி முதலியவைகளைக் கூட்டிப் பலவீனத்தால் ஏற்பட்ட தளர்ச்சிக்கு உடம்பில் பூச உபயோகிப்பதுண்டு. இதில் அடியில் கண்டபடி பல வகையுண்டு.
b. It is a product of Coccus lacca hemiptera, which is an insect, but it is improperly considered to be a gum. The female of this insect makes holes in the bark of certain trees in order to lay its eggs in and the incrustation there is called lac and it is in fact formed by the exudation from the bodies of the insects. It is universally employed for dyeing red and it is also used in the preparation of native ink. A peculiar acid (புளிப்பு) is found in lac and it is called laccic acid. Vaidyans prescribe lac medicinally in long standing bowel complaints. It is also mixed with gingelly oil for external application to the head, in cases of debility from continued fever. Tincture of lac is a favourite with Hakeems for cleaning and washing. A decoction of the stick lac, mustard seed oil and the pounded root of Morinda citrifolia (dyeing mulberry), is used for ancinting the body in cases of general debility. There are different varieties, of this substance viz- (The insect Caccus lacca (Indian origin) should not be confounded with that of the mexican cochineal insect called ‘Cocous cacti’ introduced into India from Mexico by the East India Company about the year 1799).
