a. கட்டைக்கரி, இது கறுப்பாயும், நொறுங்கும் தன்மை வாய்ந்ததாயும், இடைக்கிடையே கண்ணறைகள் உள்ளதாயும் இருக்கம். உருசியும், வாசனையுமற்றது. இதன் வடிவு கட்டையைப் பொறுத்தது. மருந்து எரிப்பதற்குச் சாதாரணமாய் எருக்கங்க கரியையே உபயோகிப்பதுண்டு. அடுப்புக்கரி நாற்றத்தை நீக்கும் இயல்பு வாய்ந்ததால், அது அசுத்தங்களைப் போக்குவதற்கும் தண்ணீரை வடிக் கட்டுவதற்கும் உபயோகப்படும்.

b. Wood charcoal – Carboligni. Artifical coal which is a black, brittle and porous mass without taste or smell. It retains the shape and texture of the part of wood it came from. For pharmaceutical purposes, the charcoal of the madar plant is always used. Medicinally, wood charcoal is antiseptic, deodoriser and disinfectant. Ordinarily, it is used for filtering water.
